{"id":2372,"date":"2012-02-22T14:53:56","date_gmt":"2012-02-22T18:53:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/melchin.org\/oeuvre\/?page_id=2372"},"modified":"2012-03-23T17:29:02","modified_gmt":"2012-03-23T21:29:02","slug":"artists-writing-spirit","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/melchin.org\/oeuvre\/artists-writing-spirit\/","title":{"rendered":"Artist Writing: Spirit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><br \/>\nSPIRIT, 1992<\/strong><br \/>\n__________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p>In <em>SPIRIT<\/em>, an enormous swollen barrel is balanced on a tightrope of grass and grain.\u00a0Characterizing an uneasy relationship between industrial and agricultural America, and nature throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, <em>SPIRIT<\/em> constructs a portrait of a landscape <em>on the line.<\/em> The thick rope, braided with native grasses indigenous to the American Prairie, represents an inter-connective ecology.\u00a0Spanning the room in this installation, utilizing plants like Big Bluestem Grass, Indian Grass and Switchgrass, this &#8220;tightrope of biodiversity&#8221; is a material portrait of a once extensive natural system reduced to a threadlike trace that strains to exist under a massive cask.\u00a0 The industrial measure of production, whether of food or fuel, is the barrel or ton.<\/p>\n<p>The ton (OE,<em> tunne<\/em>, large cask) or barrel in this work is an uncomfortable stand-in for a century of production on top of this fragile representation of the historic prairie.\u00a0<em>SPIRIT<\/em> concentrates its critique on a culture intoxicated with production and its commodities, continuing to maintain its &#8220;act.&#8221; This act has an illusion of abundance, balance and control with a natural environment, while the ecology that signals its catastrophic fall is to be considered an impediment to its progress, competitiveness, and bravado.\u00a0This work takes a specific American landscape as its metaphor, the Tall Grass Prairie.\u00a0Largely extinct, it is part of a powerful history and mythology, the American pioneering spirit.\u00a0The uncomfortable side of that spirit is placed on the barrel form, a monstrosity distended, full of itself, stuck in the middle and unable to continue its roll over a line of dying green.<\/p>\n<p>The funambulist or tightrope artist calls the inner core of the rope the &#8220;soul.&#8221;\u00a0The soul of the American landscape is the variety of life that exists upon the myriad forms of rock and soil.\u00a0A society maintaining a mind of endless consumption is a burden that the soul cannot bear.\u00a0The political attitude at the end of this century has the preservation of the remaining natural ecology in an uneven competition with the frantic production of capital in the midst of a greatly degraded environment.\u00a0 It is not the act to follow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SPIRIT, 1992 __________________________________________________ In SPIRIT, an enormous swollen barrel is balanced on a tightrope of grass and grain.\u00a0Characterizing an uneasy relationship between industrial and agricultural America, and nature throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, SPIRIT constructs a portrait of a landscape on the line.
